January 8, 2014--Intro to "The City"
In today's class we compared our budgets from yesterday with what we might make in our future (hoped for) career. Some of us had a surplus and some of us were left with a deficit (negative income). We then split into groups of 3 and became familiar with our characters for "The City". Each group will follow one character through our financial learning.
January 7, 2014--Nutrition Quiz and into to Finances
We began today's class with a brief, open-note quiz on yesterday's nutrition lesson. We then began our new unit--finances! We began by discussing what debt is and learning that the average Cdn. household has approximately $25, 597 in consumer debt--that's a lot! We then did a pre-assessment quiz to see how much we already know about the financial world. Many of us were surprised to learn just how much interest is charged monthly on credit card debt. We then began to do a hypothetical assessment of what our buget may be in the not to distant future (5-10 years after grad).
For homework: Finish up your budget. We will revisit this in class tomorrow

January 6, 2014--Eating with the Food Guide
Today in class our guest speaker Mr. Grey taught us about several aspects of nutrition and healthy eating. We began by assessing how healthy we currently eat. We then looked at the Canada Food Guide and discovered how many servings of each of the four food groups we require daily. We also discussed what a serving actually looks like--turns out most of us are eating a LOT more meat than our bodies need! After this, we looked at ingredient labels, nutrition facts and nutrition claims. We then put what we have learned into practice with an assignment based on creating a weekend's worth of healthy, balanced meals (ACCORDING to the Food Guide).
For Homework: your completed meal plan is due tomorrow in class.

December 16, 2013--Drugs and Alcohol with the RCMP :)
For today's class we were joined by Constable Venema from the Grand Forks detachment of the RCMP. He talked with us frankly about drug and alcohol use in the area and the consequences associated with use. We then continued our assignment from last week researching sugar.
December 10-11, 2013--Let's talk about sex...
Wednesday and Thursday we had guest speakers in our class (Mrs. Webster and Linda M. from the Glanville Centre) to discuss with us STI's. sexual decision making and birth control. While at times uncomfortable or perhaps redundant topics, statistics show that education is the best prevention when it comes to STI's and teen pregnancy :)
December 9, 2013--The Secrets of Sugar
In today's class we looked at the dangers of eating TOO MUCH added sugar. We used sugar cubes to show just how much additional sugar is added to many popular processed food products. We then viewed the CBC Fifth Estates Documentary, "The Secrets of Sugar."

December 5, 2013--Healthy Relationships cont.
Connie and Ally joined our class again today to continue our Healthy Relationships discussion. Today we focussed on why people are abusive, what abuse looks like and sexual assault. We learned that the age of consent in BC is 16 years, but that there are age-exemptions. Important stuff to know!
In our second block we engaged in a discussion of bullying: what is looks like, why people do it and what we can do to curb it here at GFSS.
For those of you who have overdue assignments. Get them done as soon as possible. Interim report cards are going home on Wednesday!

December 4, 2013--Healthy Relationships: Dating Violence
In today's class, Connie and Ally from the Canadian Red Cross talked with us about Healthy Relationships and violence/abuse in romantic relationships. As we learned today, 1 out of 4 who are abused, and 3 out of 10 offenders, believe that violence in dating in a sign of love. With statistics like that, it's obvious that we need education around what healthy relationships look like. The ladies will be back with us tomorrow morning for the second part of our Healthy Relationships unit.
December 3, 2013--The Sextortion of Amanda Todd
In today's class we spent some time considering what our social media profiles tell (that they shouldn't) and the information they leave out (which perhaps should be included). We then spent the rest of class viewing The Fifth Estates documentary, "The Sextortion of Amanda Todd". This documentary delves into the danger many young adults are finding themselves in these days as a result of risque online behaviour and the online predators--or cappers-- who blackmail or "sextort" youth for further sexual acts/images.
December 2, 2013--Digital Reputation

October 28, 2013--Grit
Today in class we focused on the quality of 'Grit'. Grit according to Angela Duckworth is the ability to persist or persevere over long periods of time to see our goals accomplished. Grit is also one of the key factors in determining success.
We watched Angela's TED talk and then completed her grit "Quiz" to see where we ourselves fall on the grit scale. Recognizing that the best of us still have room for improvement, we then reflected upon how we can become grittier in our lives. We then read the article posted below (see In-class study and response assignment), and filled out a corresponding worksheet.
Finally, we began working on an assignment in which we research an inspiring person who has shown grit. Please see the assignment guidelines attached below.
For homework: Complete the worksheet for "Why kids should fail..." also, if you have not yet finished your Pursuit of Happyness essay that is due. It's worth 12 marks so be sure to get it in :)

October 22, 2013--"The Pursuit of Happyness"
To continue on our theme of goals/goal setting, we watched the "based on a true story" movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. This movie details the life of Chris Gardener, a bright, amibitious young man who overcomes many hardships to see the realization of his goals. After the movie we worked on a graphic organizer that asked the following questions:
- What relationships and connections helped Chris reach his
goals? - What relationships and connections got in the way of
Chris realizing his goals? - What practical details did Chris have
to juggle to make it? - What failures and potential failures did
Chris face before reaching his goals? - What character traists
were important for Chris on his journey to a better
life? - Describe the goals Chris set out to reach in The Pursuit
of Happyness ?
October 21--S.M.A.R.T goals
Today in class read an articles which discussed the different types of goals (being and doing goals), the 4 areas of goals and why people fail to achieve their goals. We learned that there are 10 common "roadblocks" to attaining goals. After this, we explored S.M.A.R.T. goal setting. A S.M.A.R.T goal is one that is SPECIFIC, MEASUREABLE, ACHIEVABLE/ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC and TIME-SPECIFIC. When we set our goals according to this criteria, we are much more likely to see our goals attained.
For homework: finish setting your S.M.A.R.T goal from the handout in class. Be sure to be SPECIFIC. Set a goal that will require hard work, but is still realistic! Think about how you will measure your goal and what kind of timeline you are working with. Who will help keep you accountable?

October 18, 2013--Effective Workspaces
During class on Friday, we focused on what makes an effective workspace (and what does not). Individually, we looked at the various rooms in our homes considering the pros and cons of each as a workspace. We then used this information to determine where the most effective workspace for each of us personally, would be.

October 17, 2013--Procrastination, Monkey Brain and Multitasking
Procrastination and multitasking were today's themes. We began with a discussion on procrastination. What it is--avoiding something you should be doing, and WHY we do it--MONKEY BRAIN! Or, in other words, when we feel stressed or threatened, our amygdala (the little part of our brain where the fight or flight response occurs) shuts down our prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain where our higher-level thinking and judgements occur). As a result, we go into avoidance mode. KNOWING that however, means we no longer have an excuse. Once we learn about our limitations, it's time to develop them. How do we avoid procrastinating when stressed? The answer is simple--plan!
In today's world, multitasking is seen as an admirable trait. Who wouldn't want to be able to expertly accomplish an assortment of tasks at once? Unfortunately, science is showing us that multitasking isn't what it's all cracked up to be. Not only do we often not get much of anything done, or done well, multitasking can also have negative effects on the brain.
For those who missed the latter part of class today:

October 16, 2013--Time Perspective and Management
Today in class we talked about time managment. To begin, we viewed Phil Zimbardo's TED talk "The Psychology of Time." Phil's talk introduced us to the idea of "time frames" and "time perspectives." Basically, the way we approach life. Are we present-oriented? Living mainly for the immediate situation? Are we past-oriented? Focusing on what was and basing our decisions on memories or are we future-oriented? Often sacrificing life's pleasures for anticpated consequences. Ideally, our time perspectives would include an optimal mix of past, present and future. This way, we can enjoy life now and later :)
To further consider HOW to get this optimal mix, we looked at a powerpoint lesson just FULL of tips on time management! Awesome.

October 7, 2013--Critical Inquiry: Health/Safety risks in the Workplace
Today in class we continued on our quiz creation. We then divided into 5 groups based on various industries: retail, performing arts, construction, agriculture and forestry, and hospitality. In our groups we considered how different factors such as heat stress, sun exposure, noise exposure, chemical and mineral exposure and bio hazards can affect the health of young workers. Our goal? To become informed as well as to generate ideas on how to minimize (or totally prevent!) the risk.
We will continue on this assignment in class tomorrow.

October 7, 2013--"Housekeeping" and Quiz Creation
Today in class we discussed a few issues that have been popping up: 1. students not taking completion marks seriously, and 2. students not doing the writing assignments. We then moved onto our newest, ongoing project; we will be creating our own individual quizzes for our workplace saftey unit. Over the next several days, we will spend 20 or so minutes in class creating questions for our quizzes. Please see the attached PDF of what your quiz should look like :)

October 3, 2013--A day of catching up...
Today in class, we watched a video of one man's return to the workplace after a tragic, life-altering (workplace) injury. After discussing his story we spent the remainder of class working to finish our assignment from yesterday. If you have not yet completed your one-page report on hazards within a particular occupation, this is due on MONDAY. If not in by Monday, you will be in study hall :)
October 2, 2013--P.P.E pt. 2
Today in class, we reviewed P.P.E. and applied our knowledge to a diagram explaining various types of P.P.E. as well as what kinds of injuries they could prevent (i.e. what they are used/worn for). We then sought to apply our newfound expertise of personal protective equipment to our own career goals. To do this, we began a new writing assignment in which we:
1. choose a career
2. research 5-10 possible hazards associated with the job
3. list the various kinds of P.P.E. that could help minimize the risk on injury on the job
4. suggest other strategies for safety in the workplace (for example, communication practices, cleanliness and organization).
This piece will be due, in class, Monday October 7th :)

October 1, 2013--Personal Protective Equipment
Today in class, we discussed Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.). P.P.E. is equipment that protects you (the worker) in the workplace. While P.P.E. does not eliminate hazards, it does reduce the risk of injury; as an employee, you are responsible to learn HOW to wear the necessary P.P.E.. You are also responsible to then actually wear it.
September 30, 2013--Hazard Recognition in the Workplace
Picking up where we left off on Thursday, we began today's double block by working on our workplace hazard pamphlets. For these pamphlets we selected one of several industries in BC and then researched the percentage of young worker injuries in that industry, what kinds of injuries they experience, how they are injured (what causes it) as well as some ideas for how to make the workplace a safer place to be. We then organized this information into a pamphlet *DUE WEDNESDAY* (lost your rubric? find one conveniently attached below!)
In the second block we looked at hazards in the workplace and how to prevent (or at least limit) them. We then broke into pairs and considered an image of an unsafe workplace scene. We looked at the images to 1. identify the hazards 2. consider what the results of such hazards could be (injuries etc.) and 3. how to control those hazards ( for e.g. protective gear, following procedures, clean/organized work areas, and communication).
If you missed class or just need a refresher, please see the attached powerpoint below.

September 26, 2013--Workplace Injury
Today in class with Ms. Foster, we looked at the major causes of workplace injury. After some discussion and sharing of personal stories, we moved onto creating pamphlets detailing the hazards associated with the BC industry of your choice. On Monday we will continue our online research looking to find information on hazards, injury rates and the costs associated with these.
September 25, 2013--Rights and Responsibilites in the Workplace
Today in class we discussed the rights and responsibilites of employees and employers in the workplace. To begin, we first defined rights and responsibilites as a class. Rights we determined were "things we are entitled to" and "privileges that cannot be taken away". Responsibilities we defined as "things we are expected to do" and "obligations". Once we established the meaning of these terms, we moved into groups were we generated criteria for rights and resposibilities of employees and of employers.
I have attached a copy of the official rights and responsiblities (WorkSafe BC) for your reference below

September 24, 2013--Lost Youth
In today's class we continued with our theme of youth safety in the workplace. Today's lesson--lost youth--focused on the video documentary of the same name that detailed the stories of four young workers whose lives had been dramatically altered through devastating workplace injuries. As we learned, not only are young workers the most likely to be injured in the workplace, these injuries are usually significant and often occur withing the first six months on the job. Ways to avoid injury? Know your rights and responsibilities as a worker. Remember you have the right to refuse unsafe work and to request additional training with no consequence. We will continue with the theme of rights and responsibilities in tomorrow's class.
September 23, 2013--Alive After Five
In today's class, Layne of "Alive After Five" was our guest speaker. As she informed us, upwards of 28 young workers are injured in BC every day. She gave us information regarding how and why these injuries are occurring and also some ways to avoid them.

September 19, 2013--Miers-Briggs Typing
In today's class we used the Miers-Briggs Personality typing test. We then compared it to the test we took on Tuesday to see which one proved a more accurate representation of our personalities. Choosing the personality type we thought best fit us, we went to the website, personalitypage.com/careers.html and persused the list of careers that "ideally" fit our type. After some reflection, we responded on a worksheet.
This is for completion marks. Please see me (Mrs. Grey) if you need a worksheet or further explanation.

September 10, 2013--Focus Areas
In today's class we looked at the Eight Focus Areas you can use in order to tailor your education--beginning in secondary school--to your interests, abilities and future goals. In looking at the focus areas and the associcated career paths, skills sets and education required, you can gan a clearer idea of where you can go and what it will take to get you there. In order to personalize our study of focus areas, we embarked on a project. The task? To imagine you are recruiting your peers to your focus area. Through the use of a brochure.
Please see the attached files below for the official description of the assignment and my expectations for excellence :)

September 6, 2013--TGIF (oh, and other options for obtaining credits...)
During Friday's class we reviewed the requirements of the graduation program. Then we moved on to discussing our options for meeting these requirements: in-school course credits and "other options". To familiarize ourselves with these other options, we divided into 6 groups--each group responsible for covering one of the topics (distributed learning/course challenge/equivalency/external credits/post-secondary course credits/independent directed studies). Each group filled out information pertaining to their "option" and then gave a brief presentation to the class.

September 5, 2013--The Graduation Program pt. 1
Today in class we began looking at the Graduation Program--what the requirements are for you to graduate from highschool with a Dogwood (a BC highschool diploma). Using the Grad Planner 2013/2014 booklet, we answered a series of questions regarding these requirements. Finally, we worked on a graduation plan. Using our own individual interests and abilities, future goals, as well as an awareness of course/club/activity offerings at GFSS we began drafting a template of what our next several years of school might look like.
Homework: Any graduation plans not completed in class today will be due tomorrow (September 6th). This assignment will be marked complete or incomplete. To ensure your assignment is complete.
